20 Aug 2005 - Founders Day
WARLINGHAM PARK BOWLS CLUB
CELEBRATES 40 YEARS
Warlingham Park Bowls Club members met on Saturday 20th August to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its founding
The club was originally part of the Sports and Social Club of Warlingham Park Hospital being set up for the benefit of the staff and patients. It was for many years administered by the hospital, which also provided greenkeeping and maintenance facilities. The League of Friends of the hospital financed the construction of the pavilion, which is still in use. Since the mid 1990s when the hospital was being closed the club has taken responsibility for all of its own running costs and services and has grown to more than 100 members.
To mark the occasion a 6 rink match was played between two teams of club members captained by the only Founder Members who are still members of the club, George Driver and Pat Fitzpatrick. Brian Wilkinson who is also a Founder Member but no longer a member took part in the match. The result was in doubt right up to the end but after close scrutiny of the score cards George Driver?s team was declared the winner by 4 shots, 116 to 112. To complete a most enjoyable afternoon an excellent buffet meal was served after the game.
A presentation was made to the 3 founder members present of a framed montage made up of photographs of the Hospital Clock Tower, and the green during a match, flanked by the 2 badges which the club has used during its 40 years, and signed by the club members playing in the match.
